Storage & Quality
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Storage Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is corrosive to aluminum, and some metal containers. While not hazardous, the fluid can become contaminated from the improper storage materials. DEF container, and everything that comes in contact with the solution, must be composed of stainless steel or certain plastics. Fleets operating in extreme climates or with outside storage systems may have to factor temperature into their storage. DEF freezes at 12 degrees Fahrenheit, but no quality issues result from thawing. If expose to high temperatures around the clock for several months, however, the product may degrade. Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Basic quality control procedures must be used to prevent contamination. One method of ensuring product quality is to verify the product is certified through the American Petroleum Institute. A list of certified suppliers is available at www.apidef.org.
