“Keeping your diesels rolling” in winter means protecting your diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) supply from freezing temperatures. Our AiRx team is actively involved in helping our partners gear up for the cold, with solutions that suit their operations. Following is a sampling of common questions we receive, with answers we think you’ll find useful:
Q: What if my DEF freezes in its package?
A: Move packaging to a warmer environment until the DEF thaws completely. DEF freezes at 11 degrees Fahrenheit. But remember that freezing will occur first in the hose and nozzle, which will prevent dispensing – even if the tank/tote/drum/jug has not frozen yet.
Q: Will product quality be compromised after freezing?
A: No, the product concentration and quality will remain acceptable and within API Certification specifications.
Q: Where should I store my DEF product?
A: It is always best to store your DEF indoors, but if that’s not possible, then a heated enclosure (mini-bulk, tote cabinet) on site would be preferred. An alternate solution would be to keep a heated tote wrap or tank wrap available to maintain temperature.
Q: What equipment is available to prevent freezing?
A: There is cold weather DEF storage solution for almost any need: heat blankets, heated enclosures, pipe insulation, tank insulation, heat tracing for pipes and bulk storage. DEF suppliers like Airgas can help you identify and incorporate the right solution for your situation.
Q: Does a bulk storage tank allow added protection?
A: It does add limited protection. Due to the added bulk mass of the liquid in the tank it will retain heat somewhat longer than a smaller tote. This, in turn, will prevent it from freezing for a longer period. Also, a bulk tank allows for recirculation of product and for insulation of the tank, both of which will prevent freezing.
Q: If DEF freezes in the tank, will I still be able to drive?
A: Yes. By the time the exhaust NOx concentrations reach a level that requires DEF dosing, the heat from the exhaust will have thawed your DEF tank. As an additional precaution, truck manufacturers are now adding heaters to the DEF tank that initiate thawing once the engine is started.
Protecting your DEF supply is a priority worth planning for, especially when you can incorporate an efficient, permanent solution. Have additional questions about winter protection of your DEF supply? Ask your question below, and our AiRx team will provide the answer.
